How this gematria calculator works

Gematria assigns a number to every letter and adds those numbers together to give a word or phrase a numerical value. This calculator performs that in five steps, and runs all 8 supported systems on the same input at once.

  1. 1The script is detected. The calculator reads the input and identifies whether it is Latin, Hebrew, Greek, or a mix, because each script has its own letter-value tables.
  2. 2Each letter is replaced by its number. Every letter is looked up in the table for the chosen system. Spaces, digits and punctuation carry no value and are skipped.
  3. 3The values are added together. The letter values are summed to produce the total for the word or phrase. Multi-word input is also broken down word by word.
  4. 4The total is reduced to a single digit. The digits of the total are added repeatedly until one digit remains. 376 becomes 3+7+6=16, then 1+6=7. This reduced value is reported alongside the full total.
  5. 5Every system is calculated at once. All 8 systems run in parallel on the same input, so the values can be compared side by side rather than one at a time.

English Gematria

Each letter takes its position in the alphabet, A=1 through Z=26, and the values are added together.

English Reverse

Latinalso called Reverse Ordinal

The alphabet is counted backwards, Z=1 through A=26, so every letter takes the mirror of its ordinal value.

Pythagorean Gematria

Latinalso called Full Reduction

Letters cycle through the digits 1 to 9. A=1 to I=9, then J=1 to R=9, then S=1 to Z=8.

English Sumerian

Latinalso called Sumerian, Agrippa

Each letter takes its ordinal position multiplied by six, so A=6 through Z=156. A word's Sumerian total is therefore always six times its English Ordinal total.

Jewish Gematria

Hebrewalso called Mispar Hechrachi, Standard Value

The 22 Hebrew letters take fixed values: Aleph to Tet are 1-9, Yod to Tsadi count in tens, and Qof to Tav count in hundreds up to 400.

Mispar Gadol

Identical to the standard value, except the five final letter forms carry their own values from 500 to 900 instead of repeating the base letter.

Hebrew Ordinal

Each letter is replaced by its numerical value and the values are added together. In standard Hebrew gematria the 22 letters run Aleph=1 through Tav=400, so חי is Chet(8) + Yod(10) = 18. In English ordinal gematria the letters run A=1 through Z=26, so LOVE is L(12) + O(15) + V(22) + E(5) = 54.

What is the difference between Mispar Hechrachi and Mispar Gadol?

They are identical except for the five Hebrew final (sofit) letter forms. Mispar Hechrachi gives a final letter the same value as its base form, so מלך is 40 + 30 + 20 = 90. Mispar Gadol gives the final forms values of 500 to 900, so the same word is 40 + 30 + 500 = 570.

What is the difference between English Ordinal and English Reverse?

English Ordinal counts forwards, A=1 through Z=26. English Reverse counts backwards, Z=1 through A=26. Every letter's two values sum to 27, so the two totals for a word differ unless the word happens to be symmetric across the alphabet.
